Italy to Explore Aeronautics and Space Cooperation with LAPAN

Wednesday (17/05), in the Showcase Room of R & D Results, LAPAN Headquarter, Jakarta, LAPAN leaders received the visit of the Embassy of Italy along with representatives of companies engaged in the field of aeronautics and space. They are Alessandro Garbellini (Representative of Italian Embassy), Pietro Bruno (Representative of Leonardo), Claudio Serafini (Representative of e-geos - Telespazio), and Enrico Russo and Alessandro Areso (Representative of Agenzia Spaziale Italiana - ASI).
The Chairman of LAPAN, Prof. Dr. Thomas Djamaluddin welcomed the Italian representatives, accompanied by the Deputy Chairman for Remote Sensing, Dr. Orbita Roswintiarti, Deputy Chairman for Space and Atmospheric Science, Afif Budiyono, and Director of Cooperation, Public Relations, and General Affair Bureau, Christianus R. Dewanto.
The Italian Team's visit was intended to explore the cooperation opportunities with LAPAN. The meeting was opened with the exposure of LAPAN's main competencies by the Chairman of LAPAN. In his presentation, he started explaining about LAPAN’s programs related to the development of Decision Support System (DSS) in the field of space and atmosphere.
Some information systems was delivered, including the use of Space Weather Information and Forecast Service (SWIFtS) application, real-time waste monitoring system, hydrometeorology disaster monitoring system using Satellite Disaster Early Warning System (SADEWA), the utilization of Maritime Broadcasting System (Sistem Embaran Maritim, SEMAR) for fisherman guide in searching for fish and monitoring the safety of marine areas, as well as explanations related to LAPAN's involvement in The International Space Environment Service (ISES).
The Chairman of LAPAN also introduced one of LAPAN R & D products in satellite field by showing the monitoring result of LAPAN-A3 / LAPAN-IPB Satellite. In accordance with its mission, the satellite supports the monitoring of the territorial waters of Indonesia with a load of Automatic Identification System (AIS). One of them is for illegal fishing surveillance. For the utilization of this system, LAPAN consistently works with Marine Security Agency (Badan Keamanan Laut, Bakamla) and Ministry of Marine and Fisheries Affairs.
Thomas also delivered the development of LAPAN’s rocket independently. The development of aeronautics technology related to the N219, N245, and N270 programs was also presented. LAPAN is also developing unmanned aircraft technology.
To improve its competence, LAPAN also cooperates internationally with, for example, CNES - France, JAXA – Japan, and China. "Currently, we are also building a national observatory in Kupang aimed for astronomical observations for international researchers," he explained.
The Italians responded by exposing the various fields mastered by E-Geos, Leonardo, and ASI. Leonardo is recognised as a world-class high-tech company in aviation, defence, and security. Its products are helicopter, aircraft, aero-structure, space launcher vehicle, as well as marine and land safety information system.
Such company is skilled in launching rocket and space shuttle spacecraft. Some examples of the main programs are Galileo's, COSMO-Skymed, Copernicus, SICRAL, ATHENA-FIDUS, Rosetta, Exomars missions, and International Space Station management. Their activity is in the field of telecommunications, earth observation, navigation, science, and space exploration.
Alesandro stated that their side is willing to open cooperation with LAPAN. One of which is cooperation to increase the capacity of human resources with the exchange of knowledge. "We as liaison with several universities in Italy is very open for LAPAN requires us to assist," he said.
The Chairman of LAPAN welcomed the cooperation offered. "We can utilise Kemenristekdikti programs for Non-Degree Education (Pendidikan Non Gelar, PNG) Pro Research with an estimated time of education from two weeks up to three months," he said. While Orbita hoped, LAPAN can establish cooperation in the field of remote sensing for the operation of earth stations, as well as data processing and its application.
Both parties will deepen the opportunity into the scope to be studied later, including following it up by proposing to the government for the efforts of drafting the cooperation of both countries.
